- Weavers construct these placemats by wrapping colorfully dyed raffia around a coil of butami, the local term in Western Uganda for banana leaf stalks. The large banana leaf stalks are pulled apart into long, thin strips, then dried, and then bundled into coils and wrapped with raffia.
- The artisans must skillfully extend more butami onto the coils as they weave, in order to maintain the consistency of the coil’s size and shape. Each coil is then wrapped or occasionally stitched to the adjacent coil.
Every placemat is unique and skillfully made by women in the villages in Uganda. All the materials used are natural & locally sourced. By purchasing these placemats you preserve the ancient arts, support artisans & raise funds for causes.
