The ancient art of basket weaving is passed down for generations from mother to daughter.
This beautiful basket is handwoven with raffia grass and banana stalks. Can be used as a fruit bowl, for wall decor or a table centre piece.
Approximately: 33 diameter x 14cm depth
- Traditionally used for serving food.
- Weavers construct these baskets by wrapping colorfully dyed raffia around a coil of butami, the local term in Western Uganda for banana leaf stalks. The large banana leaf stalks are pulled apart into long, thin strips, then dried, and then bundled into coils and wrapped with raffia.
- The artisans must skillfully extend more butami onto the coils as they weave, in order to maintain the consistency of the coil’s size and shape. Each coil is then wrapped or occasionally stitched to the adjacent coil.
Every basket is unique and skillfully made by women in the villages in Uganda. All the materials used are natural & locally sourced. By purchasing this basket you preserve the ancient arts, support artisans & raise funds for causes.
- You will receive a basket nearly identical to the one pictured above.
- Dimensions are approximate, but we do strive to get the measurements accurate within 1/2 cm. Please review the size of this item carefully using a ruler or tape measure before your purchase
